| Use advice for data set | The life cycle assessment is a “cradle-to-grave” analysis, and the system boundaries are defined according to EN 50693, as required by the PCR. For transparency reasons, the manufacturing stage is further divided into an upstream and core stage. |
| Technical purpose of product or process | This Environmental Product Declaration is a “specific product EPD” with extrapolation rules. The EPD covers the circuit breaker VD4-D6 in the ratings shown in the table below. A representative product configuration is declared as reference product, and the results can be extrapolated for other configurations according to the provided extrapolation rules. The P2/VG6 are embedded poles which are used to provide dielectric strength and protection of the vacuum interrupter (VG6). The constituent materials of the reference product are presented below. Type Material Weight [kg] Weight [%] Metals Steel, low-alloyed 148.46 62 Steel, stainless 1.01 <1 Copper 49.03 20 Aluminum 8.95 4 Other metals 3.00 1 Plastics Polycarbonate 0.80 <1 Polyamide 1.35 <1 Other plastics 1.50 <1 Others Epoxy resin 20.67 9 Cables 0.42 <1 Others 4.14 2 Total 239.33 100 |

| General comment on data set | Both primary and secondary data are used. The main sources for primary data are the bill of materials (BOM), CAD-files, and technical drawings. This is extracted from: 1) the enterprise resource planning system, 2) the product data management system, 3) the CAD software. Site specific foreground data are provided by the Production Manager and the Health, Safety & Environment Manager. For all processes for which primary data are not available, generic background data originating from the ecoinvent v3.9.1 database, with system model “allocation, cut-off by classification”, are used. The database Industry Data 2.0 is also used for material Polyoxymethylene (process: Polyoxymethylene (POM)/EU-27) which is not available by ecoinvent. The LCA software used for the calculations is SimaPro 9.5. The utility consumption and waste generation by ABB, in the core manufacturing stage, is allocated to the production of one reference product according to applicable rules. For the end-of-life allocation, the “Polluter Pays” principle is adopted according to what is defined in the CEN/TR 16970 standard. However, the potential benefits and avoided loads from recovery and recycling processes are not considered because it is not required by the PCR. According to PCR EPDItaly007 “Electronic and electrical products and systems”, the cutoff criteria can be set to a maximum of 5% of the overall environmental impacts. In PCR EPDItaly012 it is also stated that materials making up the product whose total mass does not exceed 2% of the total weight may be cut-off. In this LCA, the labels/stickers and different kinds of greases and glues have been excluded due to their weight. This is also applied to a few parts which are difficult to map accurately on SimaPro, provided that their weight is negligible. In addition, production, use and disposal of the packaging of components and semifinished intermediates have been excluded, according to PCR EPDItaly012. |
