SAM600 version 3.0 Process Interface Unit
Use advice for data set The life cycle analysis of the SAM600 3.0 follows a “cradle to grave” analysis and covers the following life cycle stages: manufacturing stage (A1-A2), including the relevant upstream process (e.g. acquisition of raw material, preparation of semi-finished goods, etc.) and the main manufacturing and processing steps (A3); distribution stage (A4); installation stage (A5), including the relevant steps for the preparation of the product for use; use stage (B6), including the required maintenance steps within the reference service life (RSL) associated to the reference product; and end-of-life stage, including the necessary steps until and for the final disposal or recovery of the product system (C1-C4, D).
Technical purpose of product or process For more information about the EPD or the product, please use our 'Contact Us' page and a member of the Hitachi Energy team will connect with you: https://www.hitachienergy.com/contact-us The SAM600 version 3.0 process interface unit is Hitachi Energy’s new flagship merging and switchgear control unit for digital substations. One easy-to-use device provides you with ultimate flexibility and speeds you on your way to the digital substation—more safely, securely, and cost-effectively. The SAM600 can be used as a process interface unit as well as a single-box merging unit or a switchgear control unit and can be flexibly integrated into state-of-the-art redundant communication architectures supporting the latest industry IEC 61850 and IEC 61869 standards. As a merging unit, SAM600 connects analog to digital, distributing current and voltage information digitally through the substation and control center. Utilities on all voltage levels gain enhanced flexibility, security, and sustainability as a result. SAM600 version 3.0 ensures reliable and accurate data acquisition and processing in digital substations. By digitalizing data to automate substation operations, SAM600 allows transmission system operators and utilities unmatched flexibility and investment protection. Whether you plan to upgrade your substation or build a new digital one, Hitachi Energy’s SAM600 process interface unit is your solution for greenfield and retrofit installations. Because of SAM600’s flexible communication options, you save with less engineering effort, fewer commissioning hours, and lower cost. You also can achieve 80% faster module exchange, thanks to its intelligent design. The SAM600 3.0 device that features in the life cycle assessment has a configuration that was selected to be representative of an average product. The configuration is: SAM600 PIU v3.0 3U 1/2 x 19" rack casing with 8 slots, max 3 AIC/AIV with LED display, 1/2 x 19", IEC. The 3U 1/2 form factor provides an ideal interface for small feeders, single breakers, or busbar voltage applications.

General comment on data set Data quality: Specific data for the product composition are provided by the manufacturer. The data represent the production of the declared product and were collected for EPD development in the year of study. Background data is based on EPDs according to EN 15804 and different LCA databases. The data quality of the raw materials in A1 is presented in the table below. Both primary and secondary data were used in the construction of the SAM600 v3.0 LCA. Primary product data was collected from the bill of materials, technical documentation and supplier input, and primary assembly site data for the 2023 fiscal year (April 2023 - March 2024) was collected from Hitachi Energy’s environmental performance database. All production site and technical data was collected during the 2024 fiscal year (April 2024 - March 2025). Secondary data supplemented the primary data for upstream material production and manufacturing, transport, use phase and end-of-life processes, as well as defining resource flows such as electricity mixes. The main database was ecoinvent, supported by other sources and all secondary data was compiled by LCA.no. Allocation: The allocation is made in accordance with the provisions of EN 15804. Incoming energy and water and waste production in-house is allocated equally among all products through mass allocation. Effects of primary production of recycled materials is allocated to the main product in which the material was used. The recycling process and transportation of the material is allocated to this analysis. Cut-off criteria: All major raw materials and all the essential energy is included. The production processes for raw materials and energy flows with very small amounts (less than 1%) are not included. These cut-off criteria do not apply for hazardous materials and substances.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
