Name
RTU560 560CMR02 communication module
Use advice for data set The life cycle analysis of the RTU560 module follows a “cradle to grave” analysis and covers the following life cycle stages: manufacturing stage (A1-A2), including the relevant upstream process (e.g. acquisition of raw material, preparation of semi-finished goods, etc.) and the main manufacturing and processing steps (A3); distribution stage (A4); installation stage (A5), including the relevant steps for the preparation of the product for use; use stage (B6), including the required maintenance steps within the reference service life (RSL) associated to the reference product; and end-of-life stage, including the necessary steps until and for the final disposal or recovery of the product system (C1-C4, D).
Technical purpose of product or process For more information about the EPD or the product, please use our 'Contact Us' page and a member of the Hitachi Energy team will connect with you: https://www.hitachienergy.com/contact-us The RTU560 product line enables substation automation for transmission and sub-transmission network substations. RTU560 represents high-end network interfacing - offering maximum flexibility with the highest number of supported protocols for sub and host communications. Designed to handle the highly complex systems in grid automation and control interfacing. RTU560 connects to all kinds of IEDs, parallel I/Os, serial connected and communication via IEC 61850. All this real time data can then be transmitted to your central SCADA systems for critical actions - protecting your primary equipment from overloading of the grid. Optimize your investments with our long life cycle policy and benefit from our agile migration concepts. The RTU560 product that features in the life cycle assessment is the 560CMR02 communication unit (CMU) module, which performs the following essential tasks: • Managing and controlling of the I/O modules via the interface to the serial I/O bus. • Reading Process events from the input modules. • Send commands to the output modules. • Communicating with control systems and local HMI systems via the serial interfaces (RS232) and the Ethernet 10/100BaseT interfaces. • Communication with Sub-RTUs, IEDs or multimeter devices via the interfaces (RS485) and the Ethernet interfaces. • Managing the time base for the RTU560 product line station and synchronizing the I/O modules. • Handling the dialog between RTU560 product line and Web-Browser via the LAN interfaces. It has six serial ports and two ethernet ports, and occupies two slots in the RTU560 rack. EPDs for other modules are also available.

General comment on data set Data quality: Specific data for the product composition are provided by the manufacturer. The data represent the production of the declared product and were collected for EPD development in the year of study. Background data is based on EPDs according to EN 15804 and different LCA databases. The data quality of the raw materials in A1 is presented in the table below. Both primary and secondary data were used in the construction of the RTU560 module LCA. Primary product data was collected from the bill of materials, technical documentation and supplier input, and primary assembly site data was collected from Hitachi Energy’s environmental performance database. All production site and technical data was from 2023 and collected during 2024. Secondary data supplemented the primary data for upstream material production and manufacturing, transport, use phase and end-of-life processes, as well as defining resource flows such as electricity mixes. The main database was ecoinvent, supported by other sources and all secondary data was compiled by LCA.no. Allocation: The allocation is made in accordance with the provisions of EN 15804. Incoming energy and water and waste production in-house is allocated equally among all products through mass allocation. Effects of primary production of recycled materials is allocated to the main product in which the material was used. The recycling process and transportation of the material is allocated to this analysis. Cut-off criteria: All major raw materials and all the essential energy is included. The production processes for raw materials and energy flows with very small amounts (less than 1%) are not included. These cut-off criteria do not apply for hazardous materials and substances.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
