Use advice for data set This EPD is based on a cradle-to-gate LCA with options module A4-A5, C1-C4 and D, in which all relevant and crucial processes have been accounted for. The general rules for the exclusion of inputs and outputs follows the requirements in EN 15804, 6.3.5, where the total of neglected input flows per module shall be a maximum of 5 % of energy usage and mass and 1 % of energy usage and mass for unit processes. Product stage (A1-A3) includes: The product stage comprises the acquisition of all raw materials, products and energy, transport to the production site, packaging and waste processing up to the ”end-of-waste” state or final disposal. The main raw material and semi-finished product used in the production of edge strips is polyethylene foam, adhesive and interliner. The main raw materials and semi-finished products are produced in Germany and Italy. Transport of the raw materials and semi-finished products are conducted by truck. The production of the edge strips take place in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. Construction process stage (A4-A5) includes: The transportation from the manufacturer to the building site is conducted by trucks. It is assumed that the edge strip is installed at a building site in Denmark. The distance from manufacturer to building site is assumed to be 800 km. Installation of the edge strip is assumed to be a manual process. Product packaging and interliner is disposed. End of Life (C1-C4) includes: The edge strip is removed from the building. The transportation from the deconstruction and demolition site to waste processing and disposal is done by truck. The waste treatment of each material is modelled according to average Danish waste handling procedures. 91% of plastic is recycled and the other 9% of plastic is landfilled. Re-use, recovery and recycling potential (D) includes: The materials that are recycled in all modules replace other materials. The plastic is assumed to replace virgin plastic.
Technical purpose of product or process The edge strip is made of PE foam with double-sided adhesive tape on the back and incisions for folding the "foot". It is used as as vertical sound insulation at the screed layer in prefabricated buildings. GERA edge strip has a closed cell structure, which means that moisture from the fresh screed material does not penetrate to other building components. The double-sided adhesive tape ensures particularly good adhesion to the wall.

General comment on data set Data quality: Specific data for the product composition are provided by the manufacturer. The data represent the production of the declared product and were collected for EPD development in the year of study. Background data is based on EPDs according to EN 15804 and different LCA databases. The data quality of the raw materials in A1 is presented in the table below. Allocation: The allocation is made in accordance with the provisions of EN 15804+A2. Incoming energy and water and waste production in-house is allocated equally among all products through mass allocation. Effects of primary production of recycled materials is allocated to the main product in which the material was used. The recycling process and transportation of the material is allocated to this analysis. Cut-off criteria: All major raw materials and all the essential energy is included. The production processes for raw materials and energy flows with very small amounts (less than 1%) are not included. These cut-off criteria do not apply for hazardous materials and substances.

Data set valid until 2030
Time representativeness description 2025-06-05 - 2030-06-05
Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system Extruded polyethylene foam with a closed cell structure, manufactured without the addition of CFCs or HCFCs. The bulk density of the PE foam is approximately 23 kg/m3, which gives a weight per m2 of 0.167 kg when adding the double-sided adhesive tape.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
