Name
RTU530 530BOD01 binary output module
Use advice for data set The life cycle analysis of the RTU530 module follows a “cradle to grave” analysis and covers the following life cycle stages: manufacturing stage (A1-A2), including the relevant upstream process (e.g. acquisition of raw material, preparation of semi-finished goods, etc.) and the main manufacturing and processing steps (A3); distribution stage (A4); installation stage (A5), including the relevant steps for the preparation of the product for use; use stage (B6), including the required maintenance steps within the reference service life (RSL) associated to the reference product; and end-of-life stage, including the necessary steps until and for the final disposal or recovery of the product system (C1-C4, D).
Technical purpose of product or process For more information about the EPD or the product, please use our 'Contact Us' page and a member of the Hitachi Energy team will connect with you: https://www.hitachienergy.com/contact-us As the distribution network becomes more intelligent, there is a growing need for independent monitoring and control devices to handle many different tasks. RTU530 delivers a new set of features and solutions for the secondary distribution automation segment in addition to many other applications. The device’s highly customizable design enables the adaptation of input and output modules based on application requirements while a robust design and optional conformal coating guarantee a long cycle life. Low power consumption enables a greener installation while optimizing the capacity of UPS batteries. All come embedded with enhanced cybersecurity features such as secure communication, encryption, and security logging which are part of the DNA of the RTU500 series. RTU530’s compact size allows fitting into small control cabinets, while intuitive handling and user-friendly design enables faster project execution. The RTU530 product that features in the life cycle assessment is the 530BOD01, a binary output module with 8 channels that can be used for the control of 8 binary process signals using relay contacts. The allocation of an output signal to the processing functions can be done according to the rules of configuration. It can process single commands, double commands, regulation step commands and digital setpoints, as well as bitstring output. EPDs for other modules are also available.

General comment on data set Data quality: Specific data for the product composition are provided by the manufacturer. The data represent the production of the declared product and were collected for EPD development in the year of study. Background data is based on EPDs according to EN 15804 and different LCA databases. The data quality of the raw materials in A1 is presented in the table below. Both primary and secondary data were used in the construction of the RTU530 module LCA. Primary product data was collected from the bill of materials, technical documentation and supplier input, and primary assembly site data was collected from Hitachi Energy’s environmental performance database. All production site and technical data was from 2023 and collected during 2024. Secondary data supplemented the primary data for upstream material production and manufacturing, transport, use phase and end-of-life processes, as well as defining resource flows such as electricity mixes. The main database was ecoinvent, supported by other sources and all secondary data was compiled by LCA.no. Allocation: The allocation is made in accordance with the provisions of EN 15804. Incoming energy and water and waste production in-house is allocated equally among all products through mass allocation. Effects of primary production of recycled materials is allocated to the main product in which the material was used. The recycling process and transportation of the material is allocated to this analysis. Cut-off criteria: All major raw materials and all the essential energy is included. The production processes for raw materials and energy flows with very small amounts (less than 1%) are not included. These cut-off criteria do not apply for hazardous materials and substances.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
