Use advice for data set The system boundary is set to cradle-to-gate with options, modules A1-A3, A4-A5, C1-C4 and module D. The figure below presents a simplified process scheme.
Technical purpose of product or process Wooden piles are used for foundation construction in the form of bank impact for soil reinforcement, especially in areas with loose soil layers where the bearing capacity is low. Examples of areas of use are bridges, buildings, harbors, locks, ponds, etc. A moisture content of 28% is used for the calculation. The wooden piles are untreated. The sapwood content of the product is 60%. Wooden piles are produced in different sizes 7-23 meters and a range of diameters. The piles are made from 100% pine. No packaging is used for the product. Materials kg/m3 % Pine 554 100

General comment on data set For forestry, national representative figures are used. Product specific data is provided by the manufacturer and used for module A3. Data from the manufacturer is based on the reference year 2024. Generic national data is used for modules A4-A5, C1-C4 and D. Generic data comes from ecoinvent v. 3.11. No poor or very poor data has been used. Data that is considered fair with regards to time, geography or technology accounts for less than 30% of all core indicators. The allocation is made in accordance with the provisions of EN15804. The main product and the co-product are allocated based on their different economic values. The economic value of the different parts of the round timber input is attributed using the market value of its final product/co-product. A conservative approach is used for transport of round timber to the sawmill based on economic allocation factors (module A2). The study does not exclude any modules or processes which are stated mandatory in the EN 15804+A2 and the applied PCR. The study does not exclude any hazardous materials or substances. The study includes all major raw material and energy consumption. All inputs and outputs of the unit processes, for which data is available for, are included in the calculation. There is no neglected unit process more than 1% of total mass or energy flows. The module specific total neglected input and output flows also do not exceed 5% of energy usage or mass.

Time representativeness
Data set valid until 2030
Time representativeness description 2025-11-14 - 2030-11-14
Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system Wooden piles are delivered according to qualities specified by demands from customers. The raw dry mass is 430 kg/m3 for pine as a Swedish average and used to calculate biogenic carbon content and the delivery density including water according to the current moisture content.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
