Use advice for data set This EPD represents a cradle-to-gate with options analysis. The analysis includes modules A1 A3, comprising extraction, transportation, and processing of natural resources, and manufacturing of the product and associated packaging. Beyond cradle-to-gate, the declared unit with options also includes transport to customers (A4), comprising transportation of the product plus its packaging over 155 km by road; waste treatment of packaging at its end-of-life (A5); and disposal of the product via the biogenic carbon content (C4). In addition, benefits and loads beyond the system boundary for the packaging are included in the analysis (D). Modules B1–B7 are not included due to the wide range of application areas for the chemical product, and difficulties in allocating environmental burdens related to these processes to the chemical product. Modules A1–A2 correspond to upstream processes, A3 to core processes, and A4 and beyond to downstream processes. The blue boxes indicate input of material and energy, including production and transport (A1 A2). The green box illustrates the process taking place at the Borregaard’s plant in Warrington (A3), producing the products (orange box). The black box illustrates transport to the customer.
Technical purpose of product or process The Calcium lignin biopolymer E liquid is typically used as a dispersing and binding agent in various industrial applications. The main raw material calcium lignosulfonate is based on lignin from spruce softwood, which is a natural and renewable material. The product is stable, easy to handle and store, and does not require classification with respect to categories of danger, symbol letters, or risk phrases. The product has a dry matter content of 43.65 % when sold to customers. The product consists of lignosulfonate and water.
General comment on data set The production data was collected in 2025 and represents the production in 2024. Specific data is used on the supply of the main raw material, calcium lignosulfonate, which is supplied by Borregaard Sarpsborg, Norway (>70% of environmental impact in all core environmental impact indicators). The environmental profile of this input is documented in NEPD-3611-2301 (EPD-Norge, 2022). Other background data are sourced from ecoinvent v3.11, released in 2024, with adjustments made where necessary to improve representativeness. Data quality has been assed according to criteria of the UN Environment Global Guidance on LCA database development. The LCA modelling and calculations were performed using SimaPro version 10.2.0.0. Allocation was not required for this study, as all processes at Borregaard were modelled on a detailed, product-specific level. No partitioning of inputs or outputs between co-products was necessary. All raw materials and essential energy flows contributing to the environmental profile of the product are included in the LCA. No cut-offs for input material have been applied.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
