Key Data Set Information
Reference year 2025
Name
Circuit breaker VD4 12.08-12.16-25 (pitch 210, poles PT1)
Use advice for data set The life cycle assessment is a “cradle-to-grave” analysis, and the system boundaries are defined according to EN 50693, as required by the PCR. For transparency reasons, the manufacturing stage is further divided into an upstream and core stage.
Technical purpose of product or process VD4 breakers are used in electrical distribution for control and protection of cables, overhead lines, transformer and distribution substations, motors, transformers, generators and capacitor banks. The scope of a medium voltage circuit breaker is to interrupt an electric current with a mechanical actuator.

General comment on data set Both primary and secondary data are used. The main sources for primary data are the bill of materials (BOM), CAD-files, technical drawings and data collection questionnaires. In the absence of primary data, surface areas for approximately 2% of the product’s parts were estimated to approximate the corresponding surface treatments. For all processes for which primary data are not available, generic background data originating from the ecoinvent v3.11 database, with system model “allocation, cut-off by classification”, are used. The database Industry Data 2.0 is also used for material Polyoxymethylene (process: Polyoxymethylene (POM)/EU-27) which is not available in ecoinvent. The secondary raw material content is from standard ecoinvent and Industry Data 2.0 datasets. The LCA software used for calculations is SimaPro 10.2. Site-specific foreground data are provided by the core manufacturing site representative. Data quality assessment can be found in the LCA report. The utility consumption and waste generation by the reference manufacturing site, in the core manufacturing stage, is allocated to the production activities related to the reference product according to applicable rules. To ensure mass balance, additional materials are also allocated to the upstream manufacturing stage according to the waste output in the core manufacturing stage. This same allocation principle applies to factory consumption from upstream suppliers, when such data is available. For the end-of-life allocation, the “Polluter Pays” principle is adopted according to what is defined in the CEN/TR 16970 standard. However, the potential benefits and avoided loads from recovery and recycling processes are not considered because it is not required by the PCR. According to PCR EPDItaly007 “Electronic and electrical products and systems”, the cut off criteria can be set to a maximum of 5% of the overall environmental impacts. In this LCA, grease, adhesive, glue and labels have been excluded as their weights are negligible (under 2% of the total weight of the product). Certain parts have been excluded due to the complexity of modelling as their weights are negligible (under 2% of the total weight of the product). In addition, production, use and disposal of the packaging of components and semi-finished intermediates have been excluded, according to PCR EPDItaly012.

1This impact category deals mainly with the eventual impact of low dose ionizing radiation on human health of the nuclear fuel cycle. It does not consider effects due to possible nuclear accidents, occupational exposure nor due to radioactive waste disposal in underground facilities. Potential ionizing radiation from the soil, from radon and from some construction materials is also not measured by this indicator.
2The results of this environmental impact indicator shall be used with care as the uncertainties on these results are high or as there is limited experiences with the indicator.
